All About Sight Words

Thaïs has been learning about sight words in school. ‘Sight words’ is the term for words that readers should recognize instantly, for example, and, the, it, is, on… You can find the Wikipedia entry for sight words here.
She now ‘reads’ the newspapers, recognizing all the sight words and yelling them out.
In the past I’ve blogged about Thaïs’ colorful language, which has become even more colorful in the last year. But she does exercise caution, making sure (most of the time) that she doesn’t curse or abuse when there are people other than family around. Nevertheless, I try, however unsuccessfully, to tone her down.
Now, and I don’t how this has happened, she is under the impression that if she has valid reason to abuse, it’s OK. The other day, after she came back from school, she started rattling off all the ‘bad’ words in her vocabulary. “Bastard, swine, idiot, asshole…” she went on.Oh yes, the ‘F’ word too..
So naturally I told her to stop and asked her why she was cursing.
“No, mummy. I’m not cursing… I’m not angry…” Then with a wicked grin, “those are the new sight words we learned in school today.”

Another Update

I finally updated my blog theme. I’ve been wanting to do so for a long time. I guess what hastened the process is the fact that my daughter is growing up and is now able to express her opinions (through actions such as pinching, slapping and kicking) about the header images of my blog. With my earlier designs, I used to have rather embarrassing pictures of my little darling right up there.. ok.. they were cute for me, embarrassing for her. When she saw the last header image she got quite upset and asked me to take it down.

So from now on, no more embarrassing pictures of the little one. I guess I’m safe till she learns to read… 🙂

India Meteorological Department Goes ‘High Tech’

This is really amazing... absolute genius, actually.

It was threatening to rain, with dark clouds overhead and loud claps of thunder. I was waiting to pick my daughter up after school when I caught sight of this signboard just before it started raining…

Rumblers… as in thunder…? And the arrow is pointing skyward...

Too Big For Her Boots

My daughter is now officially too big for her boots. I was getting ready to go out the other day, and as usual I was running late. Thaïs couldn’t decide whether she wanted to go along with me, and as usual she waited till the last minute to make up her mind.
So I said to her, “You’d better hurry up and get dressed. Don’t delay me any further or else I’ll get really mad.”
To which she replied, “Mummy, you won’t get mad, you’re already mad!”
+++++000+++++000+++++
I’ve always preferred short hair. To put it differently, I don’t like long hair. As soon as it reaches a certain length, I run to my hairdresser, said length being not more than 2 1/2 inches.
Thaïs has never seen me with long hair (yes, I did grow my hair ONCE.. a long time ago) so when I (jokingly) said that I was going to grow my hair, her initial reaction was to laugh it off. Then, when she saw I was serious she said, “You can’t grow your hair long.. it’s so short and it never looks combed. What's going to happen when it's long?”

What Did You Say? – 8

It’s been a while since I last wrote a ‘What Did You Say?’ post. Here are some recent howlers, courtesy of my darling daughter:

  • Thaïs’ most recent favorite program is ‘Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grater’
  • During this season, since she can’t go out to play everyday because of the rain, she likes to sit in front of the TV with a bowl of ‘potcorn’ or ‘marshbellows’
  • Her current favorite storybook is ‘Jack And The Beanstop’
  • Her current TV hero is ‘Hairy Potner’ (Harry Potter)
  • When I’m driving, if it happens to rain she insists on switching on the wipers to ‘clean the drizzlings on the windscream’
  • And finally, like all kids, she loves to splash about in the rain – with her raincoat and ‘protector of the head’ (a.k.a. hood)

Driving Miss Bean

This is proof that my daughter watches too much TV. :) Mr. Bean, in particular…

Barbie

My daughter doesn’t normally play with dolls. At the toy store, she generally heads straight for the cars and bikes and such. The only doll she owns is the Barbie doll featured in this post, which was a gift on her 4th birthday. After seeing what she did to it, I’m glad she doesn’t have any others…

As if that wasn’t painful enough…

Or maybe, this is her idea of body art??
